Re-brand idea:
After looking at all the clever branding examples of designers at the exhibitions I visited, as well as at the examples of business cards I have collected from designers who I have admired at shows I have been to, I started to think I wanted an idea that was a bit cleverer and stood out better than before.
I had the idea of a simplistic back, with a series of photographs on the front of the business cards. To make the scenes for these photographs, I would cut out white letters in the same font used, to make 3d letters, and then photograph them in surroundings relevant to graphic design, such as a desk, bookshelf etc. There would be about 5 different scenes then I would get these cards printed on moo.
I could make the rest of my branding match in by making a vector logo, from tracing the 3d letters in the logo, places slightly unevenly so you get a good mix of different angles. This could cover the website design, banners for blog, stickers, stamp, CV and mini portfolio.
Experiments:
It turns out this idea was easier thought of than done. After hours of trying to get my head around how I would make the letters 3d (it would be a very complicated series of nets to allow for all the serifs and to make it look perfect), I decided to stick with cutting the letters out of card, and placing these in the surroundings mentioned. This was a lot easier! I think making the letters 3d would have taken a lot of time, which I don't really have as I really need to get all this sorted asap. Maybe it is something I'll come back to in the future, but for now, I'll work with these set of letters.
Now I need to work out where I will photograph these letters. Ideas: - Against a stack of coloured card - In a garden (growing talent) - In a kitchen (fresh talent) - On a desk - On a book shelf - With pens, pencils etc - On a cutting mat
Photographs:
I didn't want my photographs to be cheesy, or be of irrelevant scenes, so I decided to just set up one scene. Its of a work space, containing some of the tools I use (including tea), arranged around the letters.
Its a bit like spot the difference looking through these!
Doesn't work cos I had the light on, its too orange. I also think theres too much stuff.
Doesn't work from this angle.
The sellotape doesn't look right, and can see the reflection in the mug.
I like this one, but think it looks a bit plain, so I'll try adding some more bits.
I think I've overdone it and added a bit too much.
The mug takes up too much space off the side, and with the USB stick it looks a bit much.
Like it, but the mugs position is a problem again.
'G' is touching scissors and too close to the edge compared to the 'N', otherwise I think I'm getting there.
The mug is still too close to the edge.
Think I like this now!
This ones the best :)
So now I need to see if it works in the business card format. I like this image but I'm not sure its 100% what I am going for, as I try to present myself as a professional designer. If I do get some business cards printed, I think I won't get many done with this design on them, as no doubt over the year my designs will change, and I will create something I like better for the front of the business card.
