In London, I attended D&AD NEW BLOOD, NEW DESIGNERS & London College of Communication's DEGREE SHOW. I collected a few business cards and things to look in to. As well as being really interesting to see others designs, especially others competition entries to ones that I designed for (YCN Peacocks & M&S), these shows provoked a lot of thought about my practice, and how I can improve for this time next year. I would love to show my work at New Blood next year, as I think its a great platform to get lots of attention from professionals. This is the 2nd year I have been to New Blood and New Designers, and I will definitely keep going in the future, as they are very inspiring and make me want to produce a lot of new work!
I wrote some notes during the visits, these probably won't make a lot of sense to anyone else but have given me a lot of ideas for things to try in the future. As well as seeing what looks good, I also saw a few things that I know not to do!
NEW BLOOD & NEW DESIGNERS____ [Leaflets, books, business cards, postcards...]
Thoughts // Things to look at further___
- Try new effects, gold / flock / neon overlays and texts
- Create packaging for clothes range
- Print postcards as well as business cards
- Print designs on to fabric
- Mock up pattern designs for shirts and print and make as origami shirts
- Have a business card with details on wall as well so people can just photograph this
- Take care with presentation such as using photo frames etc
- Consider making designs in to products such as with Wilko's stationery
- Look at craig rowley - robots made from cans
- Laser cut coat hangers
- Decide on logo, get stamp made, laser cut logo on to wood etc
- Practice type with jelly moulds
- Could bind books with sewing
- Practice book binding and find where to send them off etc
- Make wallpaper
- Consider using different stocks and paper weights in magazine
- Do a design a day
- Print on to newspaper
- Book print slots for early sept
- Carry business cards everywhere
- Hannah Morris cards
- Lasercut, mix techniques
- Don't do whats already been done before - too many owls, foxes, birds, florals etc
- Clever idea - fonts displayed as different font thickness as pens (D&AD)
- Sew patterns on to fabric
- Think of clever, unique ideas - theme relevant to graphic design
- Letterpress text on to wall or print on to acetate
- Be clever, learn new processes - need to stand out from everyone
- For a theme think about different cultures, unusual things
- Keep an A6 folder with postcard prints and business cards with you at all events
- Look at Hallmark competition
- Think of interactive graphic design and ways to keep the viewers attention
- My idea: ironic poster - about not being another version of everyone else (But using popular fonts, overused 'hipster' style etc) - Be original
