Task:
Find some examples of good websites that inspire you and make some notes on them, think about the content, how big the logo is, navigation, what people are putting on etc....
Looking at interesting website design as seen on awards to help me get some ideas when designing my own. I am still learning how to create websites, and I know it might be a while before I can actually do the things that I want to, but I have enjoyed looking at different examples of website design. I want to create something different from the cargo style websites that everyone seems to have to make my work stand out and make my site memorable. I have written about both the good things and the bad points with these designs, to help me think about my own designs.
There have been websites I have looked at that have had really interesting ideas, but I dont think their style would work for the type of website I want to create, and they may take too long to load or not work properly on different screen sizes. I need a website that looks good and is as easy to use as possible.
Looking at so many websites, I've found whats good as well as what isn't! Lots took ages to load, and some it just wasn't clear what the website was even about - we don't want to waste our time searching for information, it needs to be clear to us.
Websites with too little on are boring and ones with too much also boring as they take too long to load. Looking through over examples of websites that I would not necessarily look at has been really useful to show me some different techniques and styles of websites but also to get my initial reactions and think about what works and what doesn't so I can bear this in mind when designing my own website.
Websites:
//
I like this website design due to the simple layout. The links are at the top, rather than at the side, and stay there throughout. There isn't too much going on, and there is only the required information, keeping it simple and to the point. The website is easy to use and quick to load. I like the contrast between the size of the images on the homepage and the links at the top.
//
This website design is quite unusual and therefore memorable. As you change the screen size, the boxes move around to fit the size of the screen, meaning it would be suitable for other devices such as an iPad. The use of black and white imagery makes the website seem sophisticated, relating to the theme, and I think the design of the website will appeal to the target audience. I think the links aren't as easy to see as with other examples, and there does seem to be a lot going on, meaning viewers may get distracted.
//
This website design is unusual, yet still very easy to use. New sections come out in organised tabs as you click on them. The images appear greyscale until you rollover them. The organisation of the images stops the page from looking cluttered and allows a lot of information to be displayed in a neat way. The pages are quick to load, and with the links staying at the side throughout it is easy for anyone to use. This is one of my favourite of the website designs.
//
This is an organised way of getting a lot of info across at once. The links stay at the top as you scroll down, and all the basic detail is found on first page but more can be find when you click the links, in the sub-sections. The simple colour scheme keeps everything looking tidy even when there is a lot of information. I think although this website design is easy to use and organised, there isn't anything particularly memorable about it.
//
This website design is a bit crazy with colours that are a bit garish and a bit painfully bright, but still interesting. The links stay at the side, and you can scroll down and everything about the same subject is colour co-ordinated. There is loads of information on this site so I think it is a bit overwhelming and you may get fed up, however, the bright colours and the fact that it is so different from other websites, make this stand out.
//
This site is easy to use, easy to navigate, fits different screens, was quick too load, and doest contain too much info or links, meaning it is not too fancy, but contains just the right amount of content, seeming like a perfect website plan. A simple link bar stays at the top even when you scroll down. The colours keep everything interesting without being too obtrusive.
//
This website fits to diff screen sizes and contains lots of photos, that when you roll over them you find out more information. This could be a good idea for my portfolio but would need easier to reach links to keep navigation simple. While there are loads of photos and this site could probably keep a viewer interested, there is far too much going on that you don't really know where to start and it may be hard to find what you are looking for.
//
The really clever ideas for this website make the studio seem more professional and talented so more likely to want to do business, but, they seem as if they are for higher paying clients - so be careful what you're putting on and for who so you don't scare off customers. I like how all the information is on one page, but also available as links at the top, this makes it easy to just scroll down and so would be easy to access on an ipad.
The background elements stays where it is where the layers on top move as you scroll, many examples of this. There is lots of content and I think this site could easily keep you entertained.
//
There is a video in the background, but a nice clean layout for the website design so that its not too much to look at. There are lots of images on info pages but just one at a time filling the whole screen to get the most out of the image and not look too much, this would be good for portfolio as I could fill the page with a project, scroll down or use the keyboard to make it easy to navigate. There are more links under each section to make homepage easier to navigate. There is a mix of type and image.
//
This website has a really tidy homepage, but with lots of images underneath, allowing different projects to come up. There maybe too many links at top but seems as if there is lots of content. It fits differenet screen sizes, but the title bar doesn't change where the layout of images does, again, the boxes re-arrange themselves to fit the page, which is a interesting effect.
//
This website looks tidy because of the white space underneath the large images. The colour scheme and good choice of fonts, working with the photography, make this website stylish as well as informative. It fits on to different size screens, but would be good if navigation moved down with page. The links are easy to find and overall is an easy to use website.
//
This website has a very tidy homepage and is easy to get to everything and find what you're looking for. I like the colour scheme and how everything matches at the images are in greyscale until you rollover them, adding a sophisticated touch.
//
The images change in to other images to save space rather than displaying loads of images at once. There are some pages with too many things that move and are distracting and with too much to read at once, and I think needs to be a good mix if there are lots of images to keep the attention of the viewer. This is another scrolly one where diff things move at diff times and the links always stay at the top. This seems to be a trendy thing to do but I would have no idea how to go about it!
//
This site has lots of content displayed in different ways such as clicking these images they then scroll on. It is very very simplistic, like the way the links are displayed based on the colour scheme of the page. It is another scrolly one, with not much content, which may not be a good thing, as the viewers may want to be kept entertained.
//
Another colour coded one, with easier to use links. Looks really good but may be slightly harder to use. Works well with the type of information that is displayed on this website.
//
This website has a simplistic design that allows the photos to stand out, and has interesting ways of navigating, as some of the pages scroll across, whereas some scroll down. There is a mix of video and image and text. The links stay at the top and do diff things when you hover over them. All these things make the website interesting to use. I won't be having anywhere near as much content on my webpage, but this works for its purpose.
//
A really simple and sophisticated website, which allows the images to stand out, with enough information about them being contained.
//
This website isn't from awwwards, but is one that I found and liked, as it has such a different style. All the websites I have looked at have been quite formal, but this one has its hand drawn text and so looks completely different. When you hover over the text, you get an example of the image done for that client. It is a really simple and easy to use website which allows the images to stand out, but has a unique spin with the text used.
