~~~~ Creating a website for PPD Study Task 6 - Spreading the word ~~~~
Session 1:
Identify purpose of a website
Identify target audience
Identify the audience needs
Demonstrate understanding of interface and basic layout techniques
Purpose
Making an online portfolio for ourselves to showcase our work, to get more work out of it - employment or freelance
Target audience
Design studios, corporate clients, events / exhibitions, independent buyers, awards, target like minded people to get them to blog about you
What do these audiences needs to see?
Your work, contact details, be careful to show that what you're selling is aimed at your target audience, do your research by looking at existing websites
Creating a website
- Put together a scamp - a sketch of a layout for the website, produce at least 3 designs to present to the client for them to chose what to go with
- Create a site map - helps you identify what content is needed on what pages
- Write a contract and get the client to sign it so they can't just keep getting you to make changes
- Ask the client to send you any screenshots of websites they already like the look of to inspire you
- You have 3-5 seconds to grab a web users attention!!
- Look at websites and think of what the first words that come to your mind are and why
- There are web standards you need to adhere to, but you have to bend some of the rules to be original but don't confuse people
- Try and keep the amount of links down to about 5 to make navigation easy to use
- A good website should be easy to navigate with the buttons in the same place each page, should never move because it might go off screen
- Your work should be what stands out so your work is the main attraction not the website
- Indexhibit - all about the content
- Design agencies often prefer websites you have designed yourself rather than using a template like indexhibit
- Avoid using animation as it looks too much
- Websites normally always scroll down and scrolling across does not adhere to web standards
- Lightbox effect - have images load over the top of something rather than take to a new page
Task
Find websites that go against web standards - do they work or not? Get some screen shots
Think about how to navigate, whats on the home page etc
vickiandlaura.co.uk
mikebaileygates.com
thisiscollate.com
monsieurcabinet.com - navigation always at the top so the navigation isn't lost as you scroll
Designing
What pages do you need?
- Home - Work - About - Contact - Twitter / FB etc [if appropriate]
Don't put all your work up, only the best
Could put about on the home page
Could split work in to categories such as print / screen
Web standards
Web safe fonts - choose font family
If you want to use other fonts have to create it as an imgae
Web safe colours
Double click on colour picker on photoshop and check only web safe colours
Adobe kuler website
Sizes
Webstandard landscape rectangle 8:6 ratio
Photoshop - new document - preset web
Size depends on who will be visiting the website 800x600 fits on any screen
Copyright
Can only put your own work on [so can't put Peacocks website on as I don't own copyright]
For next session
Find some examples of good websites that inspire you and make some notes on them, think about the content, how big the logo is, navigation, what people are putting on and then start designing your own, make note of web safe colour, font family, sizes, where the navigation is etc. Put together a scamp and a content map. Three variations of scamps, and get some feedback.
