Degree Shows

This summer I am going to go to as many degree shows as I can, as I did last year, as I found this really helpful. It some ways it made me feel better about myself as I think my standard of work is better than the standard of the 3rd years at other uni's. And it also made me feel inspired, as I know the standard of work I need to produce too.

Again, its got me thinking about my degree show. One thing I noticed at Leeds Met was that hardly any students had business cards on offer, so people may have liked their work but not taken their name down. I'll definitely be printing more than enough business cards for my show.

Here are some photos of things I liked at Leeds Met:

Like the bright colours of this branding, definitely stands out.

Lots of books to look at as well as the work on the walls.

Some clever type posters

A good mix of illustration and type based work at this show.

This competition entry, with the text made out of jelly was my favourite from this show, very creative idea, stands out from the digitally created stuff. This is my kind of graphic design, thats clever rather than just being trendy.

Not really sure what this has to do with graphic design but was in the room!

Some examples of the work I liked, I like how pieces are on display so you can look in to more detail, makes it a bit more exciting to look at, at stops everyones work from looking the same.

I also liked the printed textiles show at Leeds Uni, I want to try a bit more of this this year!

Leeds College of Art:

Not graphic design but Vis Com, but I really like this laser cut delicate imagery, and would love to try something like this!

Here is the collection of yearbooks designed by 3rd years, hopefully I'll be designing one next year. The fashion and innovation book was the best design in my opinion!

How the rooms are set out, very organised and professional looking.

Some examples of some of the work I really liked from the show.

Thoughts from the degree shows

- Don't need luxe business cards, better to have lots of moo cards with different designs from the same series of work on the back, and always have them ready to restock
- Need lots of business cards as people won't want to take it if theres only one left
- Create a text only CV, possibly screen print onto coloured paper or print on to unusual stock to make it a bit different
- Change font of branding - seen quicksand on too many things!
- Make portfolio stand out, each project could have a different colour scheme, with the title page having a coloured background, info about project, could keep other pages only image like a print
- Make sure images are high quality, printed in digital print and photographed well
- Consider laying out images and photographing all as one page rather than arranged on a computer
- Do cross college collaborations for double publicity (Like the Herlihy clothing/graphics collaboration), fashion look books, branding etc.

I also visited the London College of Communication degree show while in London.
