Enterprise & Innovation... Steps to a better you

Lecture 5

10 Steps to a Better You

Relevant people: Carl Hopkins; (business guru); Lawrence Kohlberg (psychologist); Stephen R Covery (7 habits of highly effective people)

1. Proactivity
- There is a stimulus, a choice and a response to every human decision
- Expand your sphere of influence - the more contacts you have, the more people you can talk to
- Expand into the 'circle of concern' (people you don't know yet) by being proactive
- You have three environments: internal, micro and macro. The micro environment is the one you need to expand, as they are the most likely to help you

2. Project
- Project a vision of yourself in the future: your business plan & life plan (soul satisfying elements). You need to marry the two together as they affect each other. These factors help you to prioritise and develop a business vision. Begin with this vision in mind to inspire you.

3. Provide
- Provide clear explanations to people, speak in their language, be aware of who you are talking to, and what they understand
- Say what you could do for a client in order to change their business. Demonstrate what you can do

4. Prioritise
- Put things first, stick to your mission, make sure the balance is right to achieve your overall focus (e.g. getting a degree)

5. Presents
- Effective business is things that benefit you and them - win/win situations
- If you ask someone a favour, give them a 'present' - your time, advice, insight - so that when you need help they will be willing to pay you back
- Be clear what the benefits are for you

Kohlberg's Theory about people and their development

x Pre-convetional// Behave like an infant, only think of themselves, demanding, dependent, think on the short term

x Conventional// Behave in a way we regard as being grown up, reasonable behaviour, have to be able to get along with people, are independent, think on the medium term

x Post-conventional// People thinking about the larger society, and wanting to effect communities. Think of 'we' rather than 'I'. They are changing things for everybody. They are interdependent and think about the longer term.

6. Pause
- Listen - give all your attention, and emphasise. Don't interpret, just listen
- Seek to understand, then be understood

7. Proven
- Consistent quality from a brand makes it reliable and trustable (e.g. with Coca Cola you get what you expect)
- We must seek to achieve this reliability of service, and we can be well known for this

8. Partner
- We need to work with others to achieve great things, as we can't do some things alone
- Multiply your talents - work with others outside your field, with different talents
- Example: Hollywood film Avatar brought lots of freelancers together

9. Pit-stop
- Have to take time to acquire new skills and sharpen them
- Take some time out to renew
- Continue to explore and challenge yourself
- Make time for yourself - to be able to stay on top

10. Propel
- Need to have faith in yourself, be confident.
- Don't apologise for yourself before someone can make a decision on you.
- Be proud of what you're achieving.
